Since joining Apple, Ive has occasionally taken on outside projects. In 2001, he created a white polystyrene box to house a book by Paul Smith. In 2013, an aluminum desk that Ive and Newson designed for the Project Red auction sold for $1.7 million. And Ive once sat next to J. J. Abrams at a boozy dinner party in New York, and made what Abrams recalled as “very specific” suggestions about the design of lightsabres. Abrams told me that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” would reflect those thoughts, but he wouldn’t say how. After the release of the film’s first trailer—which featured a fiery new lightsabre, with a cross guard, and a resemblance to a burning crucifix—I asked Ive about his contribution. “It was just a conversation,” he said, then explained that, although he’d said nothing about cross guards, he had made a case for unevenness: “I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty.” A redesigned weapon could be “more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous.”

When you open the packaging, you’re greeted with the wood back facing you and a strong wood smell. I’m no woodworker, but the back definitely seemed very well-done. The design is very intricate, with the mountain in the background and some trees and a hill up front. The pieces fit together perfectly, and there are no real sharp edges. I don’t see any way the woodwork could be improved. Interestingly, the inside portion of the back is hard plastic, which is probably necessary for the wood to adhere.

Recommendation: Don’t buy it – it works for some devices, but it outright won’t for others (like mine).

MINOR lab transforms a traditional hutong residence in beijing‘s old-town area, into an office and exhibition space of PAGEONE bookstore. the structure, located in a hutong – a type of narrow street – has operated as a hostel since 1998, while in 2014 it was converted into a small theater using steel. given that its function will change again soon, the architects adopted a light and flexible approach, retaining memories of the site and keeping the dynamics of the city and the street while refining the main structure.

However, it’s the software that’s Honor 8C’s biggest Achilles’ Heel. No matter how you slice it, EMUI isn’t among the best. Animations are slow, there are a lot of duplicate apps, and whatnot. EMUI is visually-inconsistent as well; some icons are circular in shape, others are square, while some are square with rounded corners. The same goes for the notification shade and individual notification cards. To top things off, the Honor 8C comes with a slew of bloatware apps (e.g. AppGallery, Camera360), and some of them can’t be uninstalled.

In order to be adopted, the recommendations needed to have the support of a majority of both Republican and Democratic appointees.
