The lower touchscreen is integrated within the center console and manages features including the climate control and Terrain Response functions1. To make operation as easy and intuitive as possible there are no moving images and no complex menus – the touchscreen provides direct inputs to seat temperature controls, for example.

I can’t recommend the Defender to the average person due to its many downfalls: excessive bulk, difficult disassembly, pointless port cover, and so on. It’s only in the harshest of conditions where I’d say that all of the Defender’s "features" would come in handy; otherwise, they’re just dead weight. The high price ($60 MSRP for the XL, $36 currently on Amazon) doesn’t help.

It’s a curious detail that since the introduction of clean air legislation in the early 1980s, coal fired power stations in Germany have been legally obliged to scrub their smoke of fine dust particles, which are for the most part ash with traces of sulfur. This is done with an electrostatic precipitator (also called an ESP), that charges the particles, and then draws them down so that they heap up in huge hoppers that look like geometric teats. Periodically, semitrailers come and collect the fine dust that has accumulated in the hoppers. Clean, white, and powdery, this dust is sold to manufacturers who turn it into plaster, and then drywall (made of calcium sulfate dihydrate). Even as servers continue to model these spaces in which we will live, the dust rain continues to silently fall. Hundreds of thousands of tons of it, every year. Even as we sit in front of screens, in order to pay for our homes or distract ourselves from them, the dust falls. The more electricity we consume, the cheaper and more widely available drywall is. The thin-walled world that we see around us is a side effect of the electricity that we consume as we produce it, study it, and dwell in it. The built environment, when examined via this metabolic material path, is in all earnest a media effect, a strange double to the stucco ornament of the rococo, with its inhuman profusion, its rank fecundity. You are looking through a sequence of photographs. At first, they all look the same. And they seem to show the same thing: nothing. No furniture, no people. You have the feeling you are in a labyrinth. You become disoriented.

I legitimately don’t understand how a company could even approve a product of this quality for production. I’d always known that ZAGG products were expensive, but they were at least high-quality. But this InvisibleShield, which retails for $49.99, is the opposite of high-quality. It completely fails at being a screen protector, and I’d rather have no protection on my screen than have this thing on it. If I sound angry, it’s because I am. I’m not sure how this made it past the prototyping stage, and I wouldn’t even pay a tenth of the price for it.

Unfortunately, some TVs(not all, but enough to make shopping for them a bit of a chore) do things that make them serve as poor monitors. The wonders of overscan are, at least mostly, over(as you’d damn well hope when handed one of the digital inputs that even sub $100 trash monitors can interpret without trouble); but weird processing settings designed to make the image look better under the harsh light of Best Buy, wonky EDID, or awful subpixel tricks (RGBW might be a clever exploitation of human luma sensitivity being greater than chroma sensitivity; but it does some awful thing to some not uncommon computer display use cases).

We report the counterintuitive mechanism of increasing boiling heat transfer by incorporating low-conductivity materials at the interface between the surface and fluid. By embedding an array of non-conductive lines into a high-conductivity substrate, in-plane variations in the local surface temperature are created. During boiling the surface temperature varies spatially across the substrate, alternating between high and low values, and promotes the organization of distinct liquid and vapor flows. By systematically tuning the peak-to-peak wavelength of this spatial temperature variation, a resonance-like effect is seen at a value equal to the capillary length of the fluid. Replacing ~18% of the surface with a non-conductive epoxy results in a greater than 5x increase in heat transfer rate at a given superheat temperature. This drastic and counterintuitive increase is shown to be due to optimized bubble dynamics, where ordered pathways allow for efficient removal of vapor and the return of replenishing liquid. The use of engineered thermal gradients represents a potentially disruptive approach to create high-efficiency and high-heat-flux boiling surfaces which are naturally insensitive to fouling and degradation as compared to other approaches.

Moving the power slider all the way to "Best performance" and toggling the backlight to "Darkest," we saw as low as 3.1 watts, which means about 11.6 hours. With brightness set to "Suggested" we saw 4.3 watts (theoretical 8.4 hours). Cranking the backlight up to maximum, draw rose quite a bit to 8.5 watts, good for a theoretical 4.2 hours.
