I can’t recommend the Defender to the average person due to its many downfalls: excessive bulk, difficult disassembly, pointless port cover, and so on. It’s only in the harshest of conditions where I’d say that all of the Defender’s "features" would come in handy; otherwise, they’re just dead weight. The high price ($60 MSRP for the XL, $36 currently on Amazon) doesn’t help.

The drop test described in Section 516.6 of the US MIL-STD-810G mandates an item to be dropped from four feet (the height a portable item is usually held while being carried or in use) onto every possible surface or edge or corner, for a total of 26 drops. The item does not have to be turned on, it simply must still work after each drop. And if it doesn’t, the standard allows up to five items. As long as one makes it through the tests, it’s a pass. That made no sense to Xplore. After all, out there in the field users won’t have four spares. And the device may well be on when it falls. And there are tall folks, so a device may drop from higher than four feet.

The Oh Joy! x Incipio case features a harder level of TPU than most clear cases. It’s still shock-absorbent and flexible, but it feels a lot more rigid in the hand. It also seems like it gets rid of the rainbow effect, which most manufacturers usually just get around with a hard plastic back. Incipio also claims that the back is scratch-resistant, which I didn’t really find to be true. Even pressing your fingernail too hard will leave a permanent mark, and keys will leave marks at almost any pressure. That being said, the clear back hides scratches fairly well, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

The short front overhang and super-slim full-LED headlights further minimize visual weight. The longer rear overhang provides balance and highlights the model’s imposing length, and features a pronounced kick to add to the muscular stance. On R-Dynamic models, twin chrome exhaust finishers are integrated perfectly into the rear bumper and provide a subtle reference to the power and performance of the Velar.

Once the helmets are painted and/or the decals are applied, they are sent through the automated clear coat booth, where the excellent Nolan “Hi-Brite” clear coat finish is applied.
