“It’s awkward when you’re dealing with models,” Ive said. “Often you’re reacting, by definition, to newness, or difference.” The new has to be given time to annoy, or disappoint. A few years ago, Ive and his colleagues assessed each prototype size of the future iPhone 6 by carrying them around for days. “The first one we really felt good about was a 5.7,” he recalled. “And then, sleeping on it, and coming back to it, it was just ‘Ah, that’s way too big.’ And then 5.6 still seems too big.” (As Cook described that process, “Jony didn’t pull out of his butt the 4.7 and the 5.5.”)

Restaurants are so loud because architects don’t design them to be quiet. Much of this shift in design boils down to changing conceptions of what makes a space seem upscale or luxurious, as well as evolving trends in food service. Right now, high-end surfaces connote luxury, such as the slate and wood of restaurants including The Osprey in Brooklyn or Atomix in Manhattan.

These photos, which as an archive go by the nickname “the house tour,” were collected from the websites of practicing Swiss architects and then collated by Alessandro Bosshard, Li Tavor, Matthew van der Ploeg, and Ani Vihervaara, the curators of this year’s Swiss Pavilion, Svizzera 240: House Tour, at the Venice Biennale, before being sequenced into a visual essay by the graphic designer Martin Stoecklin.1 The name of the sequence is based on a skit from the comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which Larry refuses to go on Susie’s house tour, because he thinks they’re predictable (“bedrooms, bathrooms, I get it”), and in the process, just as predictably upsets his host. The pictures presented a research problem, or perhaps rather a puzzle: the more that the pictures were examined, the stranger they seemed. Why did they all look so similar? Who are they for? And what purpose do they serve? The images presented a genre without a manifesto, or even a name. There exist no explicit rules for how they should look, and yet they conform to unspoken norms so closely that they could all have been taken by the same photographer.

I would use the display much like it appears to be used in the photo above, as a dynamic map. And then put miniatures on top of it. I like having a map to give an idea of what’s going on, and it would be a lot easier if I could change the map with a button push or two.

Each of the fabricated surfaces has been characterized during pool boiling of saturated water at atmospheric conditions using a custom built experimental apparatus. The complete details of the apparatus, testing procedures, and experimental uncertainty can be found in the Methods Section as well as prior publications14,19. Briefly, each surface was soldered to an insulated copper heater block and submerged in a bath of saturated water. The heat flux delivered to the surface, q”, is periodically increased in small increments and the system is left to reach thermal equilibrium, typically 10–20 minutes. After this the surface temperature and heat flux are recorded, and the process is repeated up until the CHF is reached. CHF is taken as the highest stable heat flux prior to the uncontrollable increase in surface temperature associated with dry-out. The average wall temperature at the surface of the sample, , is measured using a thermocouple placed at the top of the heater block, and accounts for the various thermal resistances between this thermocouple and the surface. These include the resistances across the solder interface and bulk copper14,19, as well as the resistance across the composite copper-epoxy region near the surface of the sample. While the embedded epoxy produces in-plane temperature variations on the surface, it does not greatly impact the overall thermal resistance of the sample itself. For the extremely thin samples tested in this work (1 mm thickness), the increase in overall thermal resistance of the substrate was ~6% for the N = 4 cm−1 design. For a more realistic wall thickness of 1/4 inch (6.35 mm), the increase in thermal resistance associated with adding embedded epoxy divisions drops to less than 1%.

There are several cases with wood for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL on the market, some of which I’ve reviewed in this roundup. But none of those cases are made entirely of wood like KerfCase’s are. KerfCase is a company based out of Pittsburgh that prides itself on crafting its cases out of a single block of wood for each, giving them a handcrafted feel that very few others can boast. Even though you’ll have to pony up quite a bit more cash for a KerfCase than most other cases, it’s worth it for the high-quality product that you get.

The phone’s combined 6GB of RAM and a minimum of 64GB of internal storage should be more than enough for you to zip along between multiple apps, and also provide more than enough storage for most. If you need more space, you can always expand it by up to 256GB via the microSD slot.

Unlike its siblings, the Covert 2 has buttons that are actually usable. They’re still slightly harder to press than they should be, but they’re tactile and don’t feel like complete crap. The cutouts for the fingerprint sensor, camera, and USB-C port are all accurate. I’m still confused, however, by the two circular holes at the bottom. Why do they exist?

How well does it work? Given that it’s a very difficult problem to solve, remarkably well. Rain and wetness is an especially difficult issue. Water is an excellent conductor and water sprayed or falling onto a touch screen will completely mess up measuring capacitance between electrodes. So the L10 may provides wet touch functionality by significantly decreasing the sensitivity of the touch controller and using a special screen protector that makes water pearl and bead enough so that there isn’t uncontrolled conduction between different parts of the display surface.

Other aspects of the case are great as well. The buttons are very tactile, just as they should be. The cutouts for everything are nothing special, but they’re well-designed and don’t intrude on anything. There’s even a lanyard holder, though nobody outside of Asia uses them and you’ll have to buy it separately. Branding is restricted to some small ‘Ringke’ text on the bottom right of the back. I really don’t have much to complain about here.
